Domino Printing Sciences has introduced the Ax560i, a continuous inkjet (CIJ) printer designed for manufacturers that need dependable product coding while managing labor shortages and the cost of unplanned downtime. Announced on September 28, the new model adds predictive maintenance and print-quality management features to the company’s Ax-Series platform.
The announcement reflects a broader change in industrial printing. Coding equipment is no longer judged only by the quality of the mark it produces. On a high-speed packaging line, a printer must also be easy for operators to maintain, simple to diagnose and predictable enough that cleaning or service can be planned around production schedules.
Monitoring is intended to identify problems earlier
The Ax560i uses on-board diagnostic tools to give operators and maintenance teams more visibility into printer health. Domino describes integrated monitoring at the component level, intended to provide early warnings of potential issues before they interrupt production.
That approach can change the timing of maintenance. Instead of waiting for a print-quality problem or a device fault to stop a line, a team can review status information and decide whether an inspection or cleaning task should be completed during a planned break. The aim is not to eliminate routine checks, but to give staff better information about when attention may be needed.
Cloud dashboards add another layer by presenting operating information in a form that can be reviewed away from the printer. Remote accessibility is also intended to help support teams investigate issues without automatically requiring an on-site visit. Domino positions these tools alongside its SafeGuard service offering, with the goal of speeding up issue resolution and limiting extended interruptions.
Cleaning and restart features target common sources of disruption
The Ax560i includes CleanAssist, an automated printhead-cleaning system designed to simplify routine cleaning. The company says the system can reduce operator exposure to solvents and optimize the use of make-up fluid. For production managers, the practical question is whether cleaning can be performed consistently and at a time that causes the least disruption.
A nozzle-face sealing feature is designed to support reliable first-time start-ups after planned shutdowns. This is relevant for facilities that stop lines overnight, between shifts or during scheduled maintenance windows. A dependable restart can reduce the time spent recovering print quality before production reaches its normal pace.
The printer also has an integrated air-drying system intended to protect the printhead and maintain performance in challenging environments, including damp or humid conditions. These features address different operating risks, but they share the same objective: keeping the print system stable across changes in shift, environment and production schedule.
Operator usability remains part of the maintenance strategy
Domino has redesigned the printhead to simplify routine servicing and reduce the amount of operator intervention required. The Ax560i retains the QuickStep 3 interface and adds guided operator wizards for selected functions. The intention is to make key tasks easier to complete consistently, even when a production line is staffed by people with different levels of experience.
That matters because a maintenance feature is only useful if staff can understand when to use it and follow the correct procedure. Clear prompts, predictable menus and practical guidance can help reduce avoidable mistakes during cleaning, setup or recovery. The company also says the cleaning system is designed to lower solvent exposure, an operational consideration for facilities that manage chemical handling as part of their safety procedures.
Integration with factory systems
For plants that connect coding equipment to broader production systems, the Ax560i supports Ethernet/IP and OPC-UA integration. Domino’s Dynamark protocol is also intended to simplify communication with other coding and marking equipment in its portfolio. These interfaces can help standardize how messages and operating information move across production lines, although the exact integration work will depend on the customer’s controls architecture.
Centralized message management through Domino Designer is another part of the workflow. Keeping coding messages consistent across lines can help prevent errors caused by manually entering or selecting different product information at individual machines. The printer can also be integrated with Domino coding automation and vision systems for wider quality-control workflows.
What manufacturers should evaluate
Before adopting a predictive-maintenance printer, manufacturers should map the failure modes that cause the most downtime, identify which data their maintenance team can act on and confirm how remote support will fit company security policies. It is also useful to define who owns routine cleaning, who reviews alerts and how maintenance tasks are recorded between shifts.
The Ax560i announcement listed the printer for demonstration at PACK EXPO International in Chicago from October 18 to 21, 2026. For production teams, the key question is how the monitoring, cleaning and integration features perform in the specific environment where codes must remain readable and lines must stay available.
